Term 2 Club Equipment Order

We are going to do a term 2 club equipment order in January. We are accepting orders as of today, however, the 80% non-refundable deposits will be collected during the first fencing week of January (5th and 8th). So, take your time in deciding what you would like to order for yourself. We hope by January that the exchange rate and Canadian dollar will be better.

We are asking a 80% deposit of the initial total cost of the item(s) you want ordered. To make things easier, if the item(s) you want on the Absolute Fencing website comes to $100 USD (without taxes, duty or shipping), you will be paying us a non-refundable deposit of $80 CAD. We are aware of the fact that the Canadian dollar and exchange rate changes on a daily basis which is why we would like the "80% of the initial total cost" in Canadian dollars. Whatever is remaining (conversion from USD to CAD, taxes and shipping costs) will be calculated and billed to you once the equipment arrives. You will be billed the remaining amount at time of item pick-up.

Here is the website: http://www.absolutefencinggear.com

Please provide us with the EXACT product name, price (in USD dollars), catalog number, size, colour, hand (left or right handed), and any other important details that will help me determine which item(s) you want. It gets even more tedious when you order clothing or full weapons, so DO BE SPECIFIC.

We will be taking in orders starting today until January 4, 2009. We will be taking in the deposits starting Monday, January 5, 2009, and the last day to pay for the deposit is Thursday, January 8, 2009.

Please send us your order via EMAIL, it's just easier that way to manage records in the event there is some form of miscommunication. Please send the email to fencingubc@gmail.com

Just to clarify on the discounts, we get 20% off Absolute Fencing (AF) equipment. The 20% club discount we get from Absolute Fencing applies to only Absolute Fencing-brand items. AF kits get 5% discount mainly because you already save a lot of money by ordering a kit so the best discount they can give us is 5% off. Despite that, the club still receives a smaller discount regardless of brand but it varies between each brand (Negrini, Leon Paul, Uhlmann). It is obvious we get the biggest discount on AF brand items.

Here is a breakdown of the different club discounts by brand:

For Uhlmann and Negrini, all FIE blades, and French and German parts -- 15% discount
For Leon Paul products -- 10% discount
For Absolute Fencing brand items (not including kits) -- 20% discount

There seems to be some confusion on how to measure yourself to figure out which size fits you best. Here's some helpful tips on how to measure yourself properly so that you'll be able to order the right size.

For chest protectors, they come in sizes XS to SL. Here is a breakdown of the sizes in detail:
XS = for girls who are under 12, or under 30A
S = is 32 ABC cup
M = is 34 BCD cup
L = is 36 BCD
XL = 38 and higher

Here's the Absolute Fencing sizing chart, for your convenience -- http://www.absolutefencinggear.com/Sizing.pdf

Note that for AF cotton jackets, measure your chest and THEN add an additional 6 inches. For AF nylon jackets, add an additional 4 inches. E.g. if you measured yourself to be 34 inches, add 6 inches -- so you would order a size 40 cotton jacket.

Here's a better diagram to better measure yourself -- http://www.fencepbt.com/pbthome3.nsf/70C93D082F9947218525704D006E70DB/346370E6002776BA8525707A0067FF4A?OpenDocument

For breeches/pants, you measure your waist. If you are a 32", then order 32". If you are slightly over 32" and prefer something a little more roomier, then I would suggest 34".

If you have a 38" chest, then I would suggest that you order 38" or 40". It really depends on the stretch of the material and the brand name. Uhlmann and Leon Paul brands, for example, have different sizing charts.

Here is some information grips and sizing information -- http://www.amfence.com/html/grip_pics.html

If you're a beginner, I would recommend that you get yourself a french grip so you won't pick up any bad habits, plus your point control would be much better. French handles/grips come in one size so there's no need to fret over which "size" is right for you, unlike pistol grips.

However, if you want to get a pistol grip, here are some useful information. Pistol grips all vary in size and style. There are many different types such as Visconti, Belgium, Russian, Rambeau, etc. People usually go for Visconti, it's more of a preference thing. It's best to physically try out a pistol grip before ordering one. The best way to do so is if you see a club member with one, politely ask him/her if you could hold onto it for a second. You'll either like it or you don't.

Glove size: 6 or 7 = Visconti extra-small, SchermaSport small
Glove size 7 or 8 = Visconti small, Belgian Standard, SchermaSport medium
Glove size 8 or 9 = Visconti small, Belgian Standard
Glove size 9 or 10 = Visconti medium, Belgian Modern, SchermaSport medium, German, Rambeau
Glove size 10 or 11 = Visconti large, Russian, Belgian Large, SchermaSport large

For glove size, you should measure around the palm of your hand excluding the thumb, and then add 0.5" - take a look at this diagram -- http://www.fencepbt.com/pbthome3.nsf/70C93D082F9947218525704D006E70DB/6B8DB481F46951648525707A0068442D?OpenDocument

For example, if you are a size 7" for gloves, then add 0.5" - you should order size 7.5" gloves.

Good luck!

There is a parkade north of the SUB called “North Parkade” you can park in.

The SUB is the bunker-like building between the Student Recreation Centre (SRC) and the War Memorial Gym.

If you come from the ferry or the border after Oak St Bridge:
Option A: take either the WEST-BOUND EXIT Marine Drive, or
Option B: follow Oak Street all the way to 41st, then turn left to 41st

41st becomes Marine Drive.

Marine Drive to 16th Avenue – that is the first and only exit on the right close to the end of the freeway section of Marine Drive.

On 16th at the 2nd traffic light, turn left, to Wesbrook; past 2 traffic lights – do not run the red lights, okay?

Turn left at GATE 11 - There will be a parking lot directly on your right, but it is a bit far away from the SUB. IF you follow the "bookstore detour" signs to the old bus loop (which is now used for parking), there is parking there right in front of the SUB.

Parking rates vary depending on where you park. On evenings and weekends, a flat rate of $4.00 is required upon entry for parkades. Tickets can be obtained at pay machines that accept $2, $1, and $0.25 coins as well as Visa and MasterCard.

This should give you an idea of how much UBC charges for parking: http://www.parking.ubc.ca/visitor_rates.html

If that lot is full, got to Gate 2 which is immediately north of Gate 1, turn left at the exit of the lot you are in, pass the tall high rises of Gage Towers.

The NORTH PARKADE is immediately west of Gage. It's at C-4/5 on the map.

The SUB is the bunker-like building NORTHWEST of the parking lot, and south of the NORTH PARKADE.

From either the north or south doors of the SUB, go up two flights of stairs, and at the top you will see the ballroom right in front of you (to your right, if you came from the south, to your left if you came from the north).

It is fairly easy to find.

Club Clothing Design Contest

We are currently taking in designs for the 2008-2009 club clothing! We have a t-shirt contest AND a hoody contest! The deadline for both contests will be on Monday, January 5, 2009 at 11:00 pm. You'll have more than enough time (plus the winter break) to design the logo. We will be ordering t-shirts, hoodies and pants but will need new designs for our t-shirts (on the front) and hoodies (on the back)! You can enter either contest or both.

The winners will have his/her logo plastered on the 2008-09 club t-shirt or hoodies PLUS he/she will receive a club t-shirt free of charge! All entries will be displayed sometime during fencing practice in January (date to be announced later). It will be voted on by the general membership! Yay! Voting will be done anonymously and will be done one week after the deadline.

Here are the rules and criteria for the contest:
1. It may either be a black and white logo OR a colour logo (2 colours maximum can be used -- black ink on white coloured t-shirt counts as 1 colour).
2. It must be a fencing-related logo for the club.
3. It must be an original design. No plagiarism please!
4. It must say somewhere on the design, "UBC Fencing Club 2008-2009" or "UBC Fencing Club 2008/2009".
5. No profanity, offensive remarks or inappropriate content are allowed.
6. The logo may have a combination of words, images or both. It is up to the artist to decide what they want in the logo.
7. Corel (.cdr), Illustrator (.ai) or Photoshop (.eps) files will only be allowed (all files should also be vectored). An additional jpeg or pdf file version of the original design must also be sent, for viewing and voting purposes. We would need a high resolution file so that it would not be blurry when enlarged.
8. Please make the logo at a considerable size so it may be enlarged for the t-shirt (if necessary). We will most likely be printing them off on 8.5 x 11 inch paper for voting purposes so try to make it as big and clear as possible. The logo will be printed on the front centre chest area of the shirt at a dimension no larger than 7 inches by 7 inches (logo can be smaller than 7 by 7 if the artist requests it). The image design for the hooded shirt will be located at the back centre area with a similar dimension no larger than 7 inches by 7 inches.
9. One entry per person. You can enter both the t-shirt and hooded shirt design contest, as long as it is ONE design per contest. No multiple entries allowed.
10. Winning submissions will become property of the UBC Fencing Club.

I suppose that is it for rules. Pretty much anything goes (just nothing offensive, please!) :) Please send us your logo design to our club email address.

Note that this logo design contest is not intended to replace our fencing club's crest logo (the one with the UBC crest with 3 swords). That is our official club logo. This contest is merely for designing an image for club clothing.

If you have any other questions, please drop us an email. :) Good luck to all who enter!!

Fall Tournament

Hi everyone,

We are organizing a Fall Tournament coming up on Saturday, November 15, 2008, from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm, in the SUB Ballroom. Note that it is a members only event!

Entry fee per event: $5 (pay at the door).

Registration is from 10:00-11:00 am, and events begin right at 11:00 am sharp! Don't be late!

If you are interested in entering this tournament, please RSVP and pre-register by Friday, November 14th via email or you can come talk to Steph during fencing practice so she can sign you up!

Events will include a beginner dry foil, electric epee and electric sabre. They will all be mixed events (both genders competing in the same event). If we get our electric sabre kits in time, it will be an electric event, otherwise we will do it as a dry sabre event. For epee and sabre, fencers of all levels are welcome to enter. Beginner foil will require you to be an actual beginner to enter.
The foil event will include some electric fencing, especially during semi-finals and the finals (and possibly quarter-finals) to make it easier to judge.

The criteria to be able to fence as a "beginner" in the beginner foil event are as follow:

  • You MUST have started fencing either during the beginning of the school year (in September 2008) or have started fencing over the summer (May 2008 onwards)
  • You MUST have started fencing within the last 6 months
  • To enter the tournament, you must be a UBC Fencing Club member and have already paid the necessary session and membership fees (we will confirm this on the day of the tournament)
All bouts and pools will be self-judged but we will have experienced judges in each piste to help with the judging.

First place winners of each event will win prizes!! Prizes include:
  • Beginner foil: a brand spankin' new dry foil (your choice of getting a right-handed or left-handed foil)
  • Epee: 2 movie tickets (valid at Cineplex Entertainment LP theatres, including Famous Players, Cineplex Odeon and Galaxy Cinemas, expires 12/15/2009)
  • Sabre: 2 movie tickets (valid at Cineplex Entertainment LP theatres, including Famous Players, Cineplex Odeon and Galaxy Cinemas, expires 12/15/2009)
If you have any questions about this tournament, feel free to email us.

Dynamo Duel Senior Tournament

Hi guys,

Thought I'd pass along this to some of you who already plan on entering competitive tournaments this year. You'll need a fencing passport for this so remember to first renew/purchase your CFF licence for $10 directly on the CFF website, followed by going to the BC Fencing Association website and purchasing a BCFA membership for $30.

Details and links on how to do this is on our website -- http://ubcfencing.blogspot.com/2008/09/bc-fencing-association-membership-for.html

There is the Dynamo Duel Senior Tournament coming up on December 13-14, 2008. The Dynamo Fencing Club is hosting this event at their club (Unit 3122 - 12811 Rowan Place, Richmond, BC).

Events include:
- Senior Men's Foil - Saturday December 13 - 9:00 am
- Senior Women's Epee - Saturday December 13 - 12:00 pm*
- Senior Mixed Sabre - Saturday December 13 - 2:00 pm*
- Senior Men's Epee - Sunday December 14 - 9:00 am
- Senior Women's Foil - Sunday December 14 - 12:00 pm
- Senior Women's Sabre - Sunday December 14 - 12:00 pm

*There seems to be a typo on askfred, the Senior Women's Epee and Mixed Sabre says "November 22" but I'm sure the tournament organizers really meant December 13...

Each event will cost $25. If you are interested, you should pre-register by December 12, 2008 at 10:00 pm, to avoid late fees (or else fees will double).

More information can be found here: http://askfred.net/Events/moreInfo.php?tournament_id=7106

To pre-register, you must do it here via askfred.

Halloween Tournament

Hey guys,

We are organizing a Halloween tournament on Saturday, October 25, 2008. Note that it is member-only. It will be informal so there won't be any poules or bouts during the tournament. It will be comprised of fun fencing-related games. And yes, tons of candy and chocolate will be, of course, provided. :)

The tournament will be from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm in the SUB Partyroom. I am hoping it will end before 1:30 pm.

So just to sum it up:
WHEN: Saturday, October 25, 2008
TIME: 11:00 am to 2:00 pm
WHERE: SUB Partyroom
WHY: Because there's fencing games and free candy!!!

I thought I'd provide some details on what these "games" will be. You guys will have a sneak peak of the games next Monday and Thursday (the week of the tournament). We'll be playing some fencing games in the beginning of class.

Games will include the rectangle game, pirates vs. navy, wall-to-wall game, 2 vs. 2 bout, line game, catch and toss, circle game, and side fencing. Fencers will be placed in to teams. You'll understand what these mean if you come next week...

If you are interested in participating, please RSVP Steph and let her know (either in person or by email) so we have a rough estimate of how much equipment to use and how much candy to bring. You can email our club email to RSVP too.

See you there!!! :)

Ice-breaker event

For those of you that I haven't had a chance to talk to yet, I'm the Social Co-ordinator for the fencing club (blond/blue hair, often seen wandering around lost until I find an epeeist to mock)

Our - kinda late - icebreaker will be this Saturday in the Party Room of the SUB from 12:30-4, where we'll play some fencing games, win a few prizes, and hopefully get to know each other behind the masks. It's always nice to be able to put a name on someone you've been stabbing repeatedly for the past half hour... Afterwards, we'll be going to cool down with beer and food at one of the campus pubs - which one depends on how many people are going to stay :)

Sorry about the last minute info - if you can't make this one, we'll do another social event when halloween hits.

Cheers; hope to see you out there!

New Saturday team practice times

Hi everyone,

There seems to be a preference for Saturday afternoon team practices than in the morning so I went and changed the times and rooms. Saturday team practices will now be in the afternoon, from 12:30 pm to 4:00 pm, in the SUB Partyroom.

Those with their own gear are welcome to drop by anytime.

September 30, 2008

No fencing on Thursday, September 18th

Just a friendly reminder that there will be no fencing this Thursday, September 18th due to Clubs Days. AMS has booked all the big rooms in the SUB during Clubs Days so we weren't able to find a room to fence in!

The next practice is on Monday, September 22, 7:00-9:00 pm in the SUB Ballroom Extension.

See you there!

Term 1 Club Equipment Orders

It's that time of year again! We've decided to start taking in orders so take out that wish list of yours and decide what you want ordered! We're ordering from Absolute Fencing again. Why? Because there's always a demand for it! Plus, as a club, we get up to 20% discount on fencing gear. So, what's different this year? Well, as a requirement to place your order down, we will need (in a form of cash or cheque) a non-refundable deposit. We're asking 80% of the total cost of the item(s) you want ordered (not including taxes, duty and shipping costs -- that will be given to us when they give us the bill after the final order has been sent out...and when customs gives us the bill of what we owe them). To make things easier, if the item you want ordered costs $100 USD on the website (without taxes and shipping added on it yet), you will have to pay us a non-refundable deposit of $80 CAD. We are aware that the exchange rate may fluctuate on a day-to-day basis (and may not be on par with the Canadian dollar) so that is why we would like the "80% of the total cost" in Canadian dollars. The remaining money we will charge you (once the taxes and shipping are calculated) will be at the time of item pick-up. When the equipment arrives, we'll bring it over to fencing practice, collect the remaining money that you owe us, THEN we'll give you your item(s).

We will be taking in orders AND MONEY starting now until Thursday, October 9, 2008. October 9th is the very last day we'll be accepting the 80% non-refundable deposit.

Please send us your order via EMAIL please, it's just easier that way to manage records in the event there is some form of miscommunication.

It's obvious we get the biggest discount on AF brand items.

XS = for girls who are under 12, or under 30A
S = is 32 ABC cup
M = is 34 BCD cup
L = is 36 BCD
XL = 38 and higher

Good luck!

Fencing over the summer

Hi everyone,

Here's some information for those who would like to fence over the summer.

1. FENCING AT MOUNT PLEASANT COMMUNITY CENTRE

Brett is teaching over the summer at Mount Pleasant Community Centre (3161 Ontario Street, Vancouver) on Wednesdays from 6:00-8:00 pm. You can drop by on Wednesdays since he's already started teaching there. They charge $6 drop-in fee for those with equipment, and I believe $7 for those without.

Mount Pleasant is pretty much at West 16th & Ontario Street, about 6 blocks south of Broadway & Main Street (this is the intersection where the 99 b-line bus stops at).

2. SUMMER FENCING IN UBC

We will be offering fencing over the summer from the beginning of May to the end of July 2008. We will stick to the usual Mondays and Thursdays, 7:00-9:00 pm. The room will be booked until midnight if you wish to stay past 9:00 pm. Room location will be announced on a weekly basis.

Unfortunately, I am only able to book rooms in the SUB 2 weeks in advance so if you wish to drop by and fence, please check out the summer timetable to see if there is fencing that day. I will continuously post up new bookings on a weekly basis when they are made available. On some days, fencing will be cancelled due to conferences and other events. I will send out an announcement if fencing practice is cancelled though, no worries. Seeing as there is a possibility of having a few fencing practices cancelled in the future, I will continue to book fencing practices until we have reached 20 lessons total - that way, you will get the lessons you have paid for.

We will be charging summer session fees exclusive for the summer only. The fees will be different than the fees that we normally charge during the school year (September-April).

Summer Session Fees:
Here are the summer session fees from May to July (20 lessons total).
$80 for once a week (you can show up either Monday or Thursday) - 10 lessons
$150 for twice a week - 20 lessons

Member drop-in fee: $8
Non-member drop-in fee: $10

**We will only accept CASH as payment for session fees or drop-in fees, thanks.**

If you have any questions, feel free to email us.

Fencing equipment orders are in

Hi everyone,

The fencing equipment orders are now in. Please come see Diondi or Steph to see what you owe the club. We accept cash or cheque (cheque payable to "UBC Fencing Club"). Thanks!

If you do not claim your order by the end of April, the equipment will belong to the club and we will sell it to the members.

We are also selling UBC club patches, $5 each. You can sew them onto your fencing jacket or breeches, or just about anywhere! Get them while they're here! :)

Thanks!
