Fencing unfortunately cancelled this week

Hi everyone,

Fencing will have to be cancelled for this week. We apologize to those who actually came to today's fencing practice (in the pouring rain) to find out that the SUB was closed/locked! We had no idea the building would be closed today. All of the SUB doors appear to be locked. The AMS let us book a room for today starting at 7:00 pm in the SUB...but failed to inform us that the building would be closed/locked. Not sure why they let us book a room in the first place, considering the building is locked and that no one was able to get into the SUB...

Anyway, we would like to apologize for the inconvenience. :(

Because we don't want the same situation to happen again, we will have to cancel Thursday's fencing practice. I have no way of knowing if the SUB will be closed again on Thursday. So...to play it safe, there will be no fencing for the remainder of December.

We will see you all in January. The term 2 schedule has been posted up on our website:
http://ubcfencing.blogspot.com/2010/12/2010-2011-term-2-schedule.html

The first class for term 2 will start on Thursday, January 6.

Anyway, we hope you enjoy the rest of your winter break and have a happy new year. Again, we apologize for the confusion and inconvenience.

Club equipment order for term 2

Hi everyone,

We are doing another club equipment order from Absolute Fencing for term 2.

If you are interested in ordering some fencing equipment, please email us by Thursday, January 6, 2011! We actually get a club discount of 20% if you buy AF products. Note that if you want to order something and get the discount, you would have to be a club member.

We get discounts on equipment which range from 5-20%:
-AF items -- 20% discount
-AF kits -- 5% discount
-Uhlmann & Negrini, all FIE blades, and French and German parts -- 15% discount
-Leon Paul products -- 10% discount

Please send Paul a complete description of the item(s) you want, and pay a non-refundable deposit of 50% of the estimated total cost - e.g. if the item costs $100 USD, you can just pay us a $50 deposit (in Canadian dollars, of course). The US-Canadian exchange rate is almost on par so you save quite a bit if you order!

There is the CSCs coming up in late January so if you need to order any FIE equipment, the deadline to send in your equipment order will be on January 6, 2011, during fencing practice. We will be sending in the order to Absolute Fencing over the weekend to ensure that your gear arrives well before the CSCs!

In your email, please include the following information:
- Your name and email address (so we can contact you when the order arrives)
- Name of items you wish to order
- Price of each item (in USD)
- Catalog number of each item
- Details of each item (colour, size, hand like right-handed/left-handed, and other information that would help us determine what you want)

For more details on ordering fencing equipment, please go here: http://ubcfencing.blogspot.com/2010/09/how-to-order-equipment.html

This will be our LAST equipment order for the school year.

If you don't have any gear, or want to upgrade your gear to be able to compete in local tournaments, AF has some great starter kits including electric kits. Please note that foil competitions in BC require masks with a conductive bib.

CSC #2 (Cadet/Junior) and CSC #1 (Senior) - January 28-30, 2011

Hi folks,

The CSC #2 (cadet/junior) and CSC #1 (senior) is coming to BC (Richmond Oval - 6111 River Road, Richmond, BC) from January 28-30, 2011.

The CFF has just released the
qualification list for the CSCs. You can check if you qualify to compete in the CSCs. According to the revised selection criteria, they are now allowing everyone with a CFF senior ranking (any ranking) to be eligible to compete in the CSCs. You don't need to be top 64 in Canada to be qualified anymore.
http://www.fencing.ca/competitions/2011jan_csc_selection_list.pdf

They also posted up the
qualification criteria for 2011-11 CSCs/Nationals.
http://www.fencing.ca/policies/athletes/2010-2011-Selection_Circuit_Selection_Criteria-eng.pdf

If you wish to compete in the CSCs in January, you
must make sure you are in the qualification list - they will not offer any refunds if you register for the CSCs and are NOT qualified to compete in that competition. Then, you must submit the entry form online and pay the necessary entry fees. The first registration deadline is January 14, 2011, at 9:00 pm PST. After that, the fees will be tripled (late penalty fee).

For more information including where to fill in the entry form, please go here: http://www.fencing.ca/competitions/2011jan_csc_info_eng.htm

Note that for senior events, it is
mandatory that you have a FIE jacket and breeches meeting the FIE standards of 800 N or better. You also need a FIE sous plastron and FIE mask. We will be doing a term 2 club order and will send in the order in the beginning of January so that it arrives well before January 28th. If you want to compete in the CSCs but do not own any FIE equipment, please talk to us as soon as possible and we can arrange to send in the club equipment order so that you receive your FIE equipment on time.

Winter party - Friday, December 17, 2010

Hi folks,

We have set a date for our end of term winter party! Mark your calendars! It'll be on Friday, December 17, 2010 starting at 6:00 pm!

We will also email you (privately via email) the details on which building and room the party will take place in. We'll also ask you when you'll be showing up to the party so we know when to meet up with you and let you into the building.

If you want to bring some food, potluck-style, you are welcome to. Please let us know in advance if you do want to bring some cookies or other yummy foods. We will have food, pizza, soft drinks, juice and other snacks available. If you want to bring some of your own Wii games or board games, please feel free and let us know if you're bringing any!

HSS and RDT results

Hi folks,

We've been getting a number of questions and concerns regarding the HSS and RDT rankings on the CFF website. We just wanted to clarify with you that the results have already been sent last month, and will be up on the domestic rankings soon. The CFF will be importing both of the tournament results, sorry for the inconvenience! They told us that the results files were misplaced hence why it was not imported into the rankings system...but they'll fix it soon! Please be patient! :/

Kind regards,
UBC Fencing Club

Tron movie social - December 22, 2010

Hi everyone,

Looks like we will be having a movie social on Wednesday, December 22, 2010.

We're going to watch the movie Tron: Legacy 3D.
Here's a trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d4RiUy23e9s&feature=channel

We will opt for the afternoon showing since the movie will be released on December 17th and I figure it will be fairly packed in the evening showings.

We will go for the 4:00 pm showing. We'll meet at the entrance at 3:00 pm to buy tickets. That way, you'll have time to also go to the washroom or buy popcorn/snacks.

We will watch it in the Scotiabank Theatre (900 Burrard Street - near Robson & Burrard St.) in downtown Vancouver.

We are also selling Cinplex Odeon movie coupons for $9 each. If you are interested in buying them, let me know.

If you would like to join us for the movie social, please RSVP by Tuesday, December 21 at 10:00 pm so I have a good idea of who will be coming.

We will go out for dinner afterward so if you would like to join us, let me know.

2010-2011 club clothing order

We are now taking in orders for the club clothing. We will be taking in orders now until Monday, December 20, 2010. That week and a half should give you all enough time to decide if you want to order any clothing.

3. Which type of clothing you want (t-shirt, zip hooded sweatshirt or sweatpants)

You will need to pay a non-refundable $20 deposit by Monday, December 20, during fencing practice. The earlier, the better. We wouldn't want you to order something and then change your mind later, and make the club pay for the clothing! If you are not able to drop by to pay the deposit by the deadline, no worries. Please speak with us and we'll work something out.

Note that there is a sizing chart on the Sanmar website - if you click on "Download Specs". There is also a sizing chart on the Stormtech website if you click on "Sizing Information".
