About Us

"Wounds of the flesh a surgeon's skill may heal,
But wounded honour is only cured by steel."
-19th Century Duelling Challenge

From the gladiators of ancient Rome to the athletes of the modern Olympics, fencers have continued the proud traditions of swordplay over the ages. The University of British Columbia Fencing Club invites new and returning members to continue this tradition.

“Aye! Avast!” “En garde!” “Draw your sword!” “All for one and one for all!” “I practice three hours a day, so when I meet a pirate, I can kill it.” “Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.”

Have you ever wanted to quote your favourite swashbuckling movies without sounding weird in front of your peers? Have you ever dreamt of living the life of a pirate or a musketeer? If you answered yes to the previous questions, fencing is the sport for you. While today the mention of a sword-fight may seem a little out of date, modern fencing has evolved from its days as a way of duelling to a modern athletic sport. Described to some as "physical chess," the UBC Fencing Club offers the clash of steel in the heat of battle, all without losing blood or leaving campus.

Our goal is to stimulate interest in and enjoyment of the sport of fencing. Beginners and returning members are especially welcome! Our club also welcomes fencers seeking more than just the fundamentals of this unique sport. Members will enjoy the use of club equipment (both electric and dry) not to mention the lowest fees anywhere in BC. All equipment is included and a certified CFF coach is available to teach beginners as well as experienced fencers (foil, epee and sabre). We offer opportunities to train members interested in becoming eligible to compete at local tournaments. If you are looking for a challenge, we hold several tournaments throughout the year, everything from a Beginner’s tournament and Intercollegiate Tournament to the Stephen Lazar Memorial Tournament which has fencers from all across Canada and the US. The club keeps its members updated on major tournaments and local fencing events, and organizes social events throughout the year.
