End of the year holiday social - Saturday, December 12, 2009

Hi everyone,

Book your calendars!! We are having our end-of-the-year holiday social on Saturday, December 12, 2009!

Location:
Paramount Place, which is literally connected to the Scotiabank Theatre on 900 Burrard Street in downtown Vancouver

Time: 6:30-10:00 pm

We'll be doing tons of fun things -- movies and Wii games!

One of our past executive members has booked her entertainment room in her apartment building for us to hang out. It is literally a mini movie theatre room with a HUGE movie screen - perfect for playing the Wii!! Or just watching any fencing movie! :)

We will either eat dinner beforehand or after the social. Details to be announced later this week via email.

Term 2 Club Equipment Order

Hi everyone,

We are in the process of taking in individual orders for our term 1 club equipment order starting now to Thursday
, January 7, 2010. We will be ordering from a company called Absolute Fencing because we get a 20% club discount.

Last day to submit your order and deposit is Thursday, January 7, 2010!

Here is the website: http://www.absolutefencinggear.com

If you would like to order fencing equipment, please email us at
fencingubc@gmail.com since it would be easier for us to manage everyone's order.

We require you to pay a
non-refundable 80% deposit. E.g. -- if you are buying something that is $100 USD, then you would need to pay $80 CAD to us before the club order deadline. You can pay by cash or cheque (payable to "UBC Fencing Club"). You can pay during our fencing practices or arrange to meet up with one of the club executives during the daytime. You will need to email and let us know if you cannot pay the deposit in time. We will make note of the amount you paid us already, and deduct that on the overall cost you owe us when the shipment arrives. We are not sure how much shipping and duty will cost since the shipment will be converted from USD to CAD dollars when it goes through Customs. There is also the USD to CAD conversion we will calculate once Canadian Customs sends us the bill.

Anyway, just know that when the equipment arrives, we will email you and let you know the remaining amount you owe us in CAD dollars (this includes taxes, shipping and duty).

Note that the USD:CAD exchange rate is almost on par, so just assume $1 USD = $1 CAD when you pay the deposit.

In your email, please include the following information:
- Your name and email address (so we can contact you when the order arrives)
- Name of items you wish to order
- Price of each item (in USD)
- Catalog number of each item
- Details of each item (colour, size, hand like right-handed/left-handed, and other information that would help us determine what you want)

Discount details:
We get
20% off Absolute Fencing equipment. This only applies to AF-brand items. AF kits get 5% discount mainly because you already save a lot of money by ordering the kit so the best discount they can give us is 5% off. Despite that, you get a smaller discount on brands such as Negrini, Leon Paul and Uhlmann.

Breakdown of discounts:
- AF-brand items -- 20% discount
- AF-brand kits -- 5% discount
- Uhlmann & Negrini, all FIE blades, and French & German parts -- 15% discount
- Leon Paul products -- 10% discount

There seems to be some confusion on how to measure yourself to figure out which size fits you best. Here are some helpful tips on how to measure yourself properly so that you'll be able to order the right size.

For chest protectors, they come in sizes XS to SL. Here is a breakdown of the sizes in detail:
XS = for girls who are under 12, or under 30A
S = is 32 ABC cup
M = is 34 BCD cup
L = is 36 BCD
XL = 38 and higher

Here's the Absolute Fencing sizing chart, for your convenience -- http://www.absolutefencinggear.com/shopping/pdf/sizing_help.pdf?osCsid=ca7a40c722302ab5723f8e25a990fff7

Note that for AF cotton jackets, measure your chest and THEN add an additional 6 inches. For AF nylon jackets, add an additional 4 inches. E.g. if you measured yourself to be 34 inches, add 6 inches -- so you would order a size 40 cotton jacket.

Here's a better diagram to better measure yourself -- http://www.fencepbt.com/pbthome3.nsf/70C93D082F9947218525704D006E70DB/346370E6002776BA8525707A0067FF4A?OpenDocument

For breeches/pants, you measure your waist. If you are a 32", then order 32". If you are slightly over 32" and prefer something a little more roomier, then I would suggest 34".

If you have a 38" chest, then I would suggest that you order 38" or 40". It really depends on the stretch of the material and the brand name. Uhlmann and Leon Paul brands, for example, have different sizing charts.

Here is some information grips and sizing information -- http://www.amfence.com/html/grip_pics.html

If you're a beginner, I would recommend that you get yourself a french grip so you won't pick up any bad habits, plus your point control would be much better. French handles/grips come in one size so there's no need to fret over which "size" is right for you, unlike pistol grips.

However, if you want to get a pistol grip, here are some useful information. Pistol grips all vary in size and style. There are many different types such as Visconti, Belgium, Russian, Rambeau, etc. People usually go for Visconti, it's more of a preference thing. It's best to physically try out a pistol grip before ordering one. The best way to do so is if you see a club member with one, politely ask him/her if you could hold onto it for a second. You'll either like it or you don't.

Glove size: 6 or 7 = Visconti extra-small, SchermaSport small
Glove size 7 or 8 = Visconti small, Belgian Standard, SchermaSport medium
Glove size 8 or 9 = Visconti small, Belgian Standard
Glove size 9 or 10 = Visconti medium, Belgian Modern, SchermaSport medium, German, Rambeau
Glove size 10 or 11 = Visconti large, Russian, Belgian Large, SchermaSport large

For glove size, you should measure around the palm of your hand excluding the thumb, and then add 0.5" - take a look at this diagram -- http://www.fencepbt.com/pbthome3.nsf/70C93D082F9947218525704D006E70DB/6B8DB481F46951648525707A0068442D?OpenDocument

For example, if your hand palm size is a size 7", then add 0.5" - you should order a size 7.5" glove.

Good luck!

Watchmen movie social -- Saturday, April 11

Hi everyone,

So based on everyone's responses, we will be watching the Watchmen movie on Saturday, April 11 sometime in the afternoon (between 1:00-5:00 pm). Location will be at the Scotiabank Theatre in downtown Vancouver (900 Burrard Street, Vancouver).

If you have any questions on transit or which bus to take, feel free to ask.

We can meet up in front of the Scotiabank Theatre 1 hour prior to the movie start time, perhaps have a drink at the Starbucks right next to the theatre while we wait. I'm not sure how busy it will be since it will be during the Easter long weekend but it's good to buy tickets an hour earlier. If you think you might be a bit late, you can always pay in advance and get one of us to buy the ticket for you.

I will announce the exact movie time on April 9 or once the times have been posted in the newspaper.

If you would like to join us, please RSVP so I have a good idea of how many people will be showing up.

Lost and found items from the Lazar

Hi everyone,

For those who came and/or fenced, thank you for your help, support and advice. Most of all, thank you for coming. We really appreciate the help! :)

I know some of you are recovering from the Stephen Lazar Memorial Tournament yesterday but we have several items that need to be claimed.

We have found the following items: 3 body cords, 1 electric foil, 1 lame jacket, 1 glove, and 1 wrist bracelet.

I would like to ask all of you to take a look in your fencing bag to see if you are missing anything.

If you think one or more of the above items belongs to you, please email us back and describe in detail the item(s) so that I know they are, indeed, yours before you can claim the item(s).

Also, if you have mistakenly picked up a watch that is not yours, please contact us so we can give it back to the owner.

Thank you.

Club equipment orders ready for pick-up

Hi everyone,

The equipment has arrived and we picked it up from UPS. We will be bringing the gear on Monday and Thursday for pick-up. Please come next week since it's 2 packages and it will be quite bulky and we have limited locker space to store these in if you do not show up!!!!

I will email the people who ordered the gear individually how much you owe. We accept cash or cheque.

Also, the t-shirts are ready. We just need to wait for the hoodies and sweatpants to be finished. I'll let you know when you can pay and pick them up.

Annual General Meeting and Elections Day

Hi everyone,

Here are some important dates:

Annual General Meeting -- it will be on Thursday, February 26, at 7:00 pm.

Elections Day (for 2009-10 Executive Committee) -- will be on Thursday, March 5, at 7:00 pm.

1. ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING -- Thursday, February 26, 7:00-7:15 pm

There are some changes AMS wants all clubs to change in their club constitution. So...we will be having our AGM on Thursday, February 26, 2009 at 7:00 pm. It should not take more than 15 minutes of your time. We'll just go over the constitution and then give some information about Elections day (and also the roles and responsibilities of each Executive position).

There, you can read the revised/proposed club constitution and if you agree with the amendments, you can sign your name and student number (UBC students only!). We will need a quorum and of those Active members, would need a two-thirds majority vote to pass these amendments, not including Executives. So please come out and approve of these changes! :)

So hopefully if you're around campus (even if you don't want to fence that day), please drop by on February 26 to read and vote on the amendments! We will have a sheet available for you to sign for that day on also on March 2nd if you cannot come on Thursday. If you cannot make it to Thursday's AGM, please email me and let me know so I will remember to bring the sheet for you to sign! Thanks!!

I have attached our proposed club constitution via email for convenience (check your inbox!) so you can just read it ahead of time and if you agree, please stop by and sign it! Thanks!

Note: the words highlighted in BLUE are the ones that have been revised and/or added onto the constitution. The majority of the constitution has been copy and pasted directly from the AMS club constitution template.

2. ELECTIONS DAY -- Thursday, March 5, 7:00-7:30 pm

Also, Elections day...we will have it on March 5th in the beginning of fencing class (from 7:00-7:30 pm). If you would like to run for an Executive position for next year, please email me and let me know. If you have any questions or concerns about Executive positions, please do not hesitate to ask. Even if you do not want to run for next year, please show up and vote to support your fellow (new) Executives!!!

We are accepting NOMINATIONS as of today. I will need an email or in-person confirmation from you that you would like to run for any one of these positions (you can choose more than one in the event that you do not get voted).

There will be 8 positions for next year:
President
Vice President
Treasurer
Armourer
Secretary
Social Coordinator
Sustainability Coordinator (new position...once we approve of the constitution!)
Equity Officer (2 representatives needed...new position once we approve of the constitution!)

General rules for the elections:

1. All candidates MUST be a UBC student next Winter semester (2009-2010 from September to April) and MUST be a current Active UBC Fencing Club Member at the time of elections. You also have to be a student for the entire year next year (we don't want you to graduate in December and leave the position in the middle of the year afterwards - you need to be a CURRENT UBC student for the WHOLE school year).
2. All candidates and current executives who wish to run for next year must declare ahead of time (preferably before March 9) that they will run. You can either send me an email or tell me in person.
3. You need to give a 3 minute (maximum) speech. This will be mandatory. No speech, no vote (why would we vote for someone who can't even prepare a speech?). No profanities or anything that may offend your fellow clubmates. Usually speeches last between 1-2 minutes.
4. Need to be present at the election. If you cannot make it (due to some unforeseeable matter), please let me know and we will read your speech for you. And yes, you will still need to write up the speech.

Club clothing orders

Hi folks,

We're going ahead with the club clothing orders. We got a quote from the companies just now.

Deadline for paying the non-refundable deposit will be on Thursday, February 5, 2009, during fencing practice. T-shirt deposits will be $10; and hoodies (zip and kangaroo) and sweatpants deposits will be $20.

We are ordering club t-shirts (unisex and ladies sizes), hooded zip sweatshirts, hooded kangaroo sweatshirts, and 2-pocket open bottom sweatpants.

If you would like to order, please email back ASAP so I know how many to accurately order. Please include the name of the item, quantity, size, colour and detailed preferences/options. Also, please include your name.

Prices will ultimately depend on what you want printed on the clothing. The prices below do not include set-up costs and taxes. For only the t-shirts, there is no set-up cost, just taxes. Set-up costs are usually $3-4 more, depending on what you want printed (we just take the set-up cost and divide by the number of orders...so if the set-up for having "FENCING" printed costs $10, and 5 people total ordered clothing with "FENCING", then it will cost you $2 for the back). For hoodies and sweatpants, there will be a set-up cost added in addition to taxes. E.g. $27 for a hooded zip sweatshirt + $4 set-up + GST & PST = about $35 total.

Gildan Eurofit t-shirts:
- Unisex sizes (S-XXL) = $17.50 (if total order is 12); $14 (if total order is 24)
- Ladies sizes (S-XXL) = $17.50 (if total order is 12); $14 (if total order is 24)
There are a number of colours to choose from.
The t-shirt design will be printed on the chest area of the shirt, possibly 5x7 inches.

Gildan heavyweight blend hooded sweatshirt (kangaroo):
- Unisex sizes (S-XL) = $21
