Random Christmas Fencing Social - Saturday, December 13th

For those who cannot make it to the Saturday, December 20th Day of the Christmas Social at the Tardis Fencing Party, we decided to set up a last minute social for those available on Saturday, December 13th.

3:00-5:15 pm - meet at entrance of Christmas Market (next to Queen Elizabeth Theatre, address is 650 Hamilton Street, Vancouver). Message/call/text Steph if you're running late.

6:00 pm - Dinner at Craft Beer Market, located at 85 West 1st Avenue. Victoria will make sure to get us a table for 6-8 (since some folks have been undecided). If you come later, we'll see you when you get there.

Fencing Christmas Social - The Day of the Christmas Social at the Tardis House

So a couple of us were discussing about doing a Christmas social after exams and we decided to hijack Bosco's Tardis House to make this happen!

The planning of *drum roll*...Operation: The Day of the Christmas Social at the Tardis House shall commence...NOW!

I know not all members have Facebook and can access the poll so...I've decided to set up a Doodle link to make polling easier! If you're interested, please let us know of your availabilities ASAP so we can choose a day which fit's everyone's busy exam schedule!

Big Hero 6 Movie Social - Saturday, November 22nd

Hello fencers,

Relax before finals, come watch a movie with fellow fencers!

We'll be watching Big Hero 6 tomorrow at 7:00 PM at Silvercity Metropolis (Metrotown in Burnaby). The movie will be the non-3D one since 3D is a tad too expensive.

We'll likely be having all-you-can-eat sushi (within the mall) beforehand nearby.

Meet at 4:30 PM at the theatre entrance to buy tickets, and then we'll head to dinner together.

Beginner's Tournament 2014

Attention beginner fencers!

We will be holding our semi-annual Beginner's Tournament on Thursday, November 13th during regular practice time (6:30 PM). The tournament is a great way for everyone to get familiar with tournament procedure, scoring, reffing, and general sportsmanship. It is also free, doesn't require a license, and is not sanctioned, so the results won't have an impact on your ranking. Registration is limited to foil fencers who have been fencing for LESS than 1 year, and/or who have not fenced for at least 7 years. I wholeheartedly recommend that everyone register, the beginner tournament was one of the most memorable parts of learning to fence for me, even though I didn't come close to winning!

     
Speaking of winning, a gold-bladed foil will be awarded to the 1st place fencer, so make sure you're practicing against a good number of opponents to get an edge on your competition.

Thanksgiving Fencing Boardgames and Dinner Social

Hello, new and not-so-new fencers! The fencing club will be having its first social of the year...at The Tardis House!

We will be doing a potluck, so cook something (or takeout), and bring it over. Also, bring a board game or two if you have any!

Success! Fencing Practice is on.

Good news; fencing is on! We were able to snag for a room tomorrow, Thursday, October 2nd in SUB 207/209 at 7:00 PM. Everyone is welcome to come, members and beginners alike, as per a usual practice. It's not going to be a ton of space like the ballroom, but we will make it work.

We are also looking for volunteers to help with setting up, taking down, score keeping, armoury table and registration desk. If you would like to volunteer contact us at fencingubc@gmail.com.

If you would like to compete but do not have a full set of electric gear, the club has a limited amount that we can lend to fencers for the day - we will only lend out equipment if you contact us in advance and request the items that you need. First e-mailed, first served.

Competitors, volunteers, and associates are invited to join us for dinner after the tournament; simply RSVP via e-mail or Facebook once the location has been agreed upon.

Room Cancellations - Current Status

Dear Fencers,

Many of you may have been wondering why there are so many cancelled practices in the next two weeks and what we are doing about it. I feel that an explanation of our current situation is in order:

At the beginning of each semester we make block bookings of the rooms in the SUB in which we practice - that means we are supposed to get the SUB Ballroom every Thursday and SUB 214/216 +  Ballroom Extension every Monday. However, the AMS also makes single bookings for events, and these bookings take priority over ours. We are forced to cancel practice when there is either no alternate room available, or the replacement room we have been given is too small to be useful for fencing.

Those are the conditions under which we are trying to hold practices, and we are working very hard on finding rooms for next week, possibly in a different building like the Student Recreation Center. Therefore, both practices for next week are cancelled for now, but keep checking the website as we are waiting on replies from several booking representatives.

Sorry about the apparent lack of fencing coming up; we are also not happy about it because we LOVE to fence and share our sport. We are doing everything we can think of to make it happen.

UBC Imagine Day 2014

Hi fencers and potential fencers!

Welcome back to our returning members, and a special welcome to students new to UBC who would like to try out the sport of fencing. We will be manning a booth at the Main Event on Tuesday, September 2nd between Buchanan and the IKBLC (the side closer to the water and mountains) - everyone is welcome to come by and....

a) Talk to us and ask us questions.
b) Sign up for our e-mailing list.
c) Check out some fencing equipment and watch LIVE fencing right behind the booth!

We will be holding regular practices this year on Mondays at 6:30PM in the SUB Ballroom Extension + SUB 207/209 and Thursdays at 6:30PM in the SUB Ballroom. Your first practice is free, all equipment is provided, and no experience is required - so why not come try your hand at swordplay? We encourage anyone interested to attend a free lesson this or next Thursday; come wearing gym clothes (jeans or restrictive pants are not recommended for reasons that will become abundantly clear).

Day of the Piggy - BBQ August 4th

The Day of the Piggy Fencing Summer BBQ Social will commence on:

At 12:00 pm to whenever we feel like leaving.

We will meet up at 12:00 pm sharp in front of the Boathouse restaurant for those who will actually meet up on time. There, we will hunt for a spot to claim our own!

For those who are late, come find us at the BBQ spot as we hunt for a picnic table spot to have our BBQ at (text us where we are)! There are a couple of wooden beach picnic tables at the red circle area (on map).

What to bring (optional):

-Ziploc containers and ziploc bags for the piggy leftovers to bring home

-Cards/games

-Camera if you want to take nice scenic pics

-Beach towel if you want to sit on the grass/sand without having your bum dirty (in the event all picnic tables are filled up)

-Plastic bags if you want to bring some things home

The club will supply: utensils (forks, spoons, knives), napkins, paper plates, plastic cups, drinks (pop, juice), hamburger buns, bread (for the piggy sandwich) and condiments. Possibly sliced cheese too.

NVFC's Paintball Social - July 19, 2014

Hi everyone!

Paul from the North Vancouver Fencing Club would like to invite us to their club's annual paint ball social! I'm passing along the information to you guys in case any of you are interested!

Details are below:
North Vancouver Fencing Club is having its annual fencers paintball party this Saturday, July 19, 2014 in Maple Ridge. I am extending an invitation out to UBC fencers as is club tradition. We are meeting at Maple Ridge Paintball (14448 224 St, Maple Ridge, BC V4R 2P8) at 9:30 am. We have a limited number of spots where the game fee (guns and masks) are already paid for (everyone will buy their own ammo). To register - email zbig-nvfc@shaw.ca with your full name and that you are attending. I will email out confirmation later in the week for whether you registered early enough that your game fee is covered.

Also, our club is doing drop-in fencing on Wednesdays from 7-9 through the summer. The fee is based on attendance, where we split the $50 cost for the night, but with a $5 minimum fee. We had 9 people (6 Sabre and 3 Epee) our first night, and I'm hoping to get even more coming out! Please let your clubmates know.

Fence-a-Thon 2014

Hi all,

The Capital City Fencers' Club presents the 9th annual Fence-a-Thon, a twelve-hour, overnight fencing marathon to benefit the BC Cancer Foundation!

The venue will be at 4564 West Saanich Road, Victoria, BC.

Date: May 31, 2014
Time: 7:00 pm to 7:00 am (next morning)
Cost: $20 per event

Our competitive fencers usually attend this tournament every year so we will most likely travel together to catch the BC ferry from Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay, then bus together to the venue. Once it's over, we'll catch the bus to the ferry terminal in Swartz Bay, arrive back in Tsawwassen and bus back to Vancouver. We will coordinate this through our Facebook group.

Equipment Order April 2014

Greetings fencers,

This month we are doing a club order from absolutefencinggear.com. If you would like to get any equipment through us and take advantage of the handy club discount, please follow the procedure outlined at http://ubcfencing.blogspot.ca/p/equipment-orders.html

Alternatively there is a post on the club's Facebook group where you can comment with your request; either method of requesting equipment is fine, but if you want to be absolutely certain of getting your order included I suggest emailing us at fencingubc@gmail.com . Please be sure to give us exact specifications so that we can order exactly what you want (eg. sizes, handedness, standard or elite gear, grip style, additional options, etc.)

The order deadline is Monday, April 21st. 80% deposits in CAD should be given to Lynn or to Jensen on or before that date.

*UPDATE: The UBC Fencing Club is not responsible for items left more than 60 days after the arrival of the order.

BC Provincial Championships - June 20-22, 2014

The BC Fencing Association welcomes all CFF and USFA fencers to the BC Provincial Open Championships!

All registrations must be pre-paid through ASKFRED by June 6th 2014. After this date double late fees will apply. To compete, a CFF licence is required.

The UBC Fencing Club would like to invite all fencers to the annual Stephen Lazar Memorial Tournament. The tournament will consist of senior events in foil, sabre and epee, and a junior (U20) sabre event.

2014 UBC Intercollegiate Tournament

Hi Everyone,

UBC is hosting an intercollegiate tournament this year!  Here's the info:
When: February 16th, 2014 (Sunday)
Where: UBC Student Union Building (Ballroom)
What: Foil, Sabre, Epee
Fee: FREE!

Please note that CFF licences are NOT required, however, you must be a current member of a college or university fencing club to compete. Beginners welcome! We can lend our club gear to you if you don't have your own so this shouldn't deter you from competing!
