Room Cancellations - Current Status

Dear Fencers,

Many of you may have been wondering why there are so many cancelled practices in the next two weeks and what we are doing about it. I feel that an explanation of our current situation is in order:

At the beginning of each semester we make block bookings of the rooms in the SUB in which we practice - that means we are supposed to get the SUB Ballroom every Thursday and SUB 214/216 +  Ballroom Extension every Monday. However, the AMS also makes single bookings for events, and these bookings take priority over ours. We are forced to cancel practice when there is either no alternate room available, or the replacement room we have been given is too small to be useful for fencing.

Those are the conditions under which we are trying to hold practices, and we are working very hard on finding rooms for next week, possibly in a different building like the Student Recreation Center. Therefore, both practices for next week are cancelled for now, but keep checking the website as we are waiting on replies from several booking representatives.

Sorry about the apparent lack of fencing coming up; we are also not happy about it because we LOVE to fence and share our sport. We are doing everything we can think of to make it happen.

UBC Imagine Day 2014

Hi fencers and potential fencers!

Welcome back to our returning members, and a special welcome to students new to UBC who would like to try out the sport of fencing. We will be manning a booth at the Main Event on Tuesday, September 2nd between Buchanan and the IKBLC (the side closer to the water and mountains) - everyone is welcome to come by and....

a) Talk to us and ask us questions.
b) Sign up for our e-mailing list.
c) Check out some fencing equipment and watch LIVE fencing right behind the booth!

We will be holding regular practices this year on Mondays at 6:30PM in the SUB Ballroom Extension + SUB 207/209 and Thursdays at 6:30PM in the SUB Ballroom. Your first practice is free, all equipment is provided, and no experience is required - so why not come try your hand at swordplay? We encourage anyone interested to attend a free lesson this or next Thursday; come wearing gym clothes (jeans or restrictive pants are not recommended for reasons that will become abundantly clear).

Day of the Piggy - BBQ August 4th

The Day of the Piggy Fencing Summer BBQ Social will commence on:

Where: Kitsilano Beach

At 12:00 pm to whenever we feel like leaving.

We will meet up at 12:00 pm sharp in front of the Boathouse restaurant for those who will actually meet up on time. There, we will hunt for a spot to claim our own!

For those who are late, come find us at the BBQ spot as we hunt for a picnic table spot to have our BBQ at (text us where we are)! There are a couple of wooden beach picnic tables at the red circle area (on map).

What to bring (optional):

-Sunglasses

-Sunscreen

-Your own water bottle/mug/cup if you don't want to use plastic cups or see it blown away by the wind

-$20 for Vincent if you are partaking in The Piggy

-Food (if you are bringing potluck dish)

-Ziploc containers and ziploc bags for the piggy leftovers to bring home

-Frisbee

-Cards/games

-Camera if you want to take nice scenic pics

-Beach towel if you want to sit on the grass/sand without having your bum dirty (in the event all picnic tables are filled up)

-Lawn chair

-Floor mat to sit down

-Plastic bags if you want to bring some things home

The club will supply: utensils (forks, spoons, knives), napkins, paper plates, plastic cups, drinks (pop, juice), hamburger buns, bread (for the piggy sandwich) and condiments. Possibly sliced cheese too.

Who's bringing what (so far):

-Vincent - The Piggy - 12 people partaking in eating it

-Yvonne - bottled water and sliced veggies

-Bosco - ??

-Geoffrey - dessert (Angel food cake)

-Steph - dessert of some kind, loaf of bread, painter's tape, plastic table sheets to put on the wooden picnic table to keep our food clean, and a few plastic bags

-June/Yvonne - salad and/or sliced veggies/lettuce

-Lynn - club sponsored items (utensils, drinks, cups, napkins, cheese)

What we need:
-Beach towel/floor mats if you want to sit on the grass/sand without getting your bum dirty

NVFC's Paintball Social - July 19, 2014

Hi everyone!

Paul from the North Vancouver Fencing Club would like to invite us to their club's annual paint ball social! I'm passing along the information to you guys in case any of you are interested!

Details are below:
North Vancouver Fencing Club is having its annual fencers paintball party this Saturday, July 19, 2014 in Maple Ridge. I am extending an invitation out to UBC fencers as is club tradition. We are meeting at Maple Ridge Paintball (14448 224 St, Maple Ridge, BC V4R 2P8) at 9:30 am. We have a limited number of spots where the game fee (guns and masks) are already paid for (everyone will buy their own ammo). To register - email zbig-nvfc@shaw.ca with your full name and that you are attending. I will email out confirmation later in the week for whether you registered early enough that your game fee is covered.

Also, our club is doing drop-in fencing on Wednesdays from 7-9 through the summer. The fee is based on attendance, where we split the $50 cost for the night, but with a $5 minimum fee. We had 9 people (6 Sabre and 3 Epee) our first night, and I'm hoping to get even more coming out! Please let your clubmates know.
