Details and criteria about the foil tournament are as follow:
- You MUST have started fencing either during the beginning of the school year in September 2007 OR have started fencing during the summer (between May 2007 and August 2007).
- You MUST have started fencing within the last 6 months.
- To enter the tournament, you must be a UBC Fencing Club member and have already paid the necessary membership and session fees. We will confirm this on the day of the tournament.
- We will lend out club electric equipment on the day of the tournament. All equipment must be signed out before use and returned at the end of the tournament. There will be a $5 deposit per item borrowed from the club (items include lame jackets, electric foils, body cords and dry foils). You may borrow the club masks and jackets without the the need to pay the $5 deposit per item however you need to sign them out and return them at the end of the day.
- There will be an assortment of electric foil fencing AND dry foil fencing during the tournament, depending on how many people enter and the demand of weapons. Electric fencing will definitely be used during the semi-finals and finals.
- Bouts and pools will be self-judged but we will have an additional experienced judge. That way, everyone has a chance to brush up on their refereeing skills and there will be another person to help with judging/refereeing.
- If you are a member but have not paid the session fees yet, you must do so before the tournament or else you will have to pay both the $5 drop-in member fee AND the $5 entry fee.
If you have any more questions about the tournament or would like to RSVP, please talk to Steph in person or by email. Thanks!

T-shirt Logo Design Contest
We are currently taking in designs for the 2007-2008 club t-shirt! The deadline will be on Monday, January 7, 2008. You'll have more than enough time (plus the winter break) to design the logo. The winner will have his/her logo plastered on the 2007-08 club t-shirt PLUS he/she will receive a club t-shirt free of charge! All entries will be displayed sometime during fencing practice in January (date to be announced later). It will be voted on by the general membership! Yay! We'll number all entries so no one will know who did what. That way, voting will be less biased.
Here are the rules and criteria for the contest:
1. It may either be a black and white logo OR a colour logo.
2. It must be a fencing-related logo for the club.
3. It must be an original design. No plagiarism please!
4. It must say somewhere on the design, "UBC Fencing Club 2007-2008" or "UBC Fencing Club 2007/2008".
5. No profanity, offensive remarks or inappropriate content are allowed.
6. The logo may have a combination of words, images or both. It is up to the artist to decide what they want in the logo.
7. Jpeg files are allowed. Other files are probably allowed - please talk to us in advance.
8. Please make the logo at a considerable size so it may be enlarged for the t-shirt (if necessary). We will most likely be printing them off on 8.5 x 11 inch paper so try to make it big and clear (at least clear enough on normal sized paper).
9. One entry per person.
10. Winning submissions will become property of the UBC Fencing Club.
I suppose that is about it for rules. Pretty much anything goes (just nothing offensive, please!) :) Please send us your logo design at the club email address: fencingubc [atmark] gmail.com
If you are curious what was done in previous years, what I can do is bring my club t-shirts and show it to you all sometime. If you have any other questions, please drop us an email. :) Good luck to all who enter!!

Halloween Tournament
Just a friendly reminder that we'll be having our Halloween tournament this Saturday, October 27, 2007, from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm in the SUB Partyroom. We'll end it much earlier than 6:00 pm by the way. We'll start the games at around 11:30 am so we'll have at least half an hour to warm-up and to get things ready - during that half an hour (or less), we'll also prep you guys up on what types of games you will be participating in, rules, etc.
This isn't one of those "real" tournaments but rather, it will consist of fencing games due to the fact that the Partyroom does not have enough room for real fencing strips/pistes. Instead, we will be having a lot of FUN fencing games. Pirates vs. the Navy (walk the plank), 2 vs. 2, 2 weapon fencing, rectangle game...just to name a few ;)
Please drop by if you can, we'll be having a ton of games and CANDY for everyone!!! :) Sugar + fencing = lots of fun!
